ARTIST STATEMENT

My career is defined by a commitment to art as a language and a belief that technical mastery is the foundation of clear communication. Currently based in the Pacific Northwest, I focus on heritage skills-based education, public commissions, and ceramic sculpture.

I believe that art is a language and craftsmanship is a way of life. My practice is an ongoing challenge to my own technical abilities, pushing the boundaries of ceramics, wood and iron to investigate storytelling through human experience. I often begin my process by making the very tools required to create the work.

I seek to forge a connection with the viewer that is grounded in the “evidence of the hand” in order to tell my story in a meaningful and authentic way. By purposefully keeping life-like renderings rough in certain areas and hidden in others, I invite my audience to create their own path through the work. This enables me to connect with viewers on a broader scale whether through life-sized public sculpture or traditional ceramics. In many ways, my teaching is my practice, as I strive to deconstruct and re-orient traditional figurative sculpture, always pursuing technical excellence alongside narrative storytelling.
